How to Reserve Your WhatsApp Username
Learn how WhatsApp username reservations work, how to claim your handle, and what rules apply before the full rollout.
WhatsApp is preparing to add usernames. Once the feature is available, new contacts will be able to reach you without seeing your phone number. If the reservation option has appeared in your app, you can claim a handle before usernames go live more widely.
1. What is a WhatsApp username?
A WhatsApp username is a unique name for your account. It starts with the @ symbol, such as @yourname123. It is separate from your display name, which is the profile name people see in chats.
When usernames launch, people who do not have your phone number saved will be able to contact you with your username. Your number will stay hidden from those new contacts. People who already have your number saved will still see it as they do now.
WhatsApp is treating usernames as a privacy feature. There is no public username directory and no autocomplete search. To message you for the first time, someone needs your exact username. WhatsApp is also adding an optional username key. With that setting on, a new contact needs both your username and the key before their first message can reach you.
2. Can you reserve a WhatsApp username now?
Yes. In late June 2026, WhatsApp started opening username reservations before the global rollout. The option is available on Android and iOS, but it is rolling out in stages. If you do not see it yet, your account may not have it.
When you reserve a username, WhatsApp holds it for you so another account cannot take it. WhatsApp says it will notify users in the app when usernames become active in their country.
Note: Reserving a username is optional. You can change or delete a reserved username later. If you delete it, WhatsApp holds it for 14 days before making it available again.
3. How to reserve your WhatsApp username
You reserve a username from the WhatsApp mobile app settings.
Step 1: Update WhatsApp
Install the latest version of WhatsApp on your Android or iOS device. The username option may not appear on older versions.
Step 2: Open settings
- On iPhone, tap the Settings tab at the bottom right.
- On Android, tap the three-dot menu in the top right, then tap Settings.
Step 3: Go to Account
Tap Account in the settings menu.
Step 4: Tap Username
Choose Username or Reserve Username.
Step 5: Create your username
Tap Create a username, then type the handle you want. If you are not sure what to use, WhatsApp may show suggestions based on what you enter.
Step 6: Save
Tap Save after entering your username. WhatsApp will show a confirmation screen if the reservation works. Tap Done to finish.
Important: Username reservation is only available in the mobile app. You cannot reserve one from WhatsApp Web or Desktop.
4. WhatsApp username rules
Your username must follow these rules:
- It must be 3 to 35 characters long.
- It can use lowercase letters (
a-z), numbers (0-9), periods (.), and underscores (_). - It must include at least one letter. A username made only of numbers is not allowed.
- It cannot include spaces or other special symbols.
- It cannot start with
www.or end with domain extensions such as.comor.net. - It cannot include restricted words or phrases related to illegal content, age-inappropriate material, or serious harm.
- It must be unique. If someone else has reserved it, you need to choose another one.
WhatsApp also reserves some usernames for businesses, governments, celebrities, and public figures, so regular accounts cannot claim them.
Claiming your Instagram or Facebook username on WhatsApp
If you want the same handle across Meta apps, add your WhatsApp account to the same Accounts Center as your Facebook or Instagram account. You can only claim the handle on WhatsApp if you already control it on one of those platforms.
5. What to do if your username is taken
If someone else has already reserved the username you want, try one of these options:
- Use a small variation, such as
@your_nameinstead of@yourname, or add a short number that is easy to remember. - Try WhatsApp's username generator if it appears after your first choice is rejected.
- Check Accounts Center if the handle is tied to your Instagram or Facebook account. Linking the accounts may let you claim it on WhatsApp.
- Reserve early if you care about a short or common handle. With a large user base, simple names are likely to go quickly.
6. Should you use your real name?
It depends on how you use WhatsApp and how easy you want to be to find.
Use your real name if you are a creator, freelancer, or business professional and want people to recognize you quickly. Since WhatsApp does not have a public search directory, only people you share your username with can use it to contact you.
Use a pseudonym if you want more distance between WhatsApp and your real identity. Your username is not publicly browsable, but anyone who knows the exact handle can use it to reach you.
A practical rule: choose something you can say out loud, spell over a noisy call, and live with for a few years. Handles tied to a job, city, or short-lived joke may age badly. A simple username, ideally 8 to 16 characters, is usually easier to remember than one packed with punctuation.
7. FAQ
Do I still need a phone number to use WhatsApp?
Yes. You still need a phone number to create and maintain a WhatsApp account. Usernames add a privacy layer. They let new contacts reach you without seeing your number, but they do not replace the number behind the account.
Will my existing contacts see my username?
People who already have your number saved will continue to see your contact name and phone number as before. Your username is mainly for people who do not have your number saved.
Can I change my username later?
Yes. You can change or delete your reserved username from the same settings menu. If you delete it, WhatsApp holds it for 14 days before making it available to others, so you have time to reclaim it if you change your mind.
What if I change my phone number?
If you change your phone number on the same device, your username moves with you. WhatsApp currently does not support transferring usernames when you switch to a different device.
Will my username be searchable publicly?
No. WhatsApp has no public directory and no autocomplete search. Someone can only use your username if they already know the exact handle.
Can I use usernames on WhatsApp Web or Desktop?
Not yet. Reserving and managing usernames is currently limited to the Android and iOS apps.
When will usernames fully launch?
WhatsApp says it will roll out usernames gradually over the coming months. Users should receive in-app alerts once the feature is live in their country. WhatsApp has not announced a specific global launch date.
What happens to my username key?
The username key is an optional privacy setting for first messages from new contacts. If you turn it on, someone needs both your username and a separate key before they can message you for the first time. You can enable or configure it once usernames are fully live.
